Understanding Adolescent Neglect

Neglect in the teenage years is no less harmful, yet is often overlooked or misinterpreted by professionals. Older children can be divided into two significant age groups, 10-14 and 15+ years of age.

As children get older, it is expected of them to take more responsibility for their actions. This is an important part of a child’s development from childhood to adulthood. However, older children still need a great deal of parental care, support and guidance. Parenting older children requires different skills, as does working with older children. Evidence is seen that professionals across agencies lack the skills and training to work with older children as effectively as they could, including recognising neglect.

By the end of the session, delegates will:

• be able to recognise neglect of older children
• Understand the challenges of definitions
• Understand the developing adolescent brain
• Appreciate the impact of trauma
• Identify how adolescent neglect practice can improve
• Promote self-care

This training forms part of the neglect training pathway, and it is recommended that anyone working with adolescents attends this course in addition to the neglect training and GCP2 training.
