Detail:

Hoarding can be described as the collecting of, and inability to discard, large quantities of, goods, objects or information. It may involve neglecting aspects of the home and/or self, resulting in poor sanitary conditions and social isolation.

If you follow any case of hoarding back to its roots, you’ll find a complex web of genetics, neurology, history, and psychology. Hoarding has implications for physical and mental health, wellbeing, housing tenure and safety for both children and adults, which is why intervention to help the person change their hoarding behaviour is so important.

We must recognise that Trauma is one of the biggest triggers of hoarding behaviour therefore a Trauma Informed Approach is crucial.

To suppport practitioners recognise and provide support to individuals who may be hoarding, DSPP have developed a Hoarding Toolkit.  This briefing gives an overview of hoarding from a trauma informed approach and provides details of how to use the toolkit in practice.

Who is this briefing for?
The brieifing is appropriate for Dudley staff in all services (both adults and children) who work with people who are may be hoarding. This will include anyone working in public facing roles in health, social care, community safety, housing, homelessness, domestic abuse or other care roles

This is a Level 1 (Awareness) course.
