“PEAK” - Peers, Exploitation, Adultification, Knives

Roadman slang is a colloquial form of language primarily spoken by young people in areas across the UK. It is characterized by its unique vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. More than just words, roadman slang encompasses a distinct lifestyle and attitude, reflecting the experiences and identities of those who speak it. “PEAK” – is used to describe a situation that is unfortunate, disappointing, or undesirable. If something is "peak," it is best avoided.

It is with a view to preventing as many of the unfortunate, disappointing or undesirable outcomes for children and young people in Dudley as we can, that Dudley Youth Justice Service will once again be delivering practitioner level training, which will seek to inform wider services about the youth justice system – as seen from the eyes of professionals as well as children and their parents/carers.

Some of you may remember – or may have attended – the last series of training delivered by Dudley YJS, namely “DIVERT” (Dudley Integrated Violence & Exploitation Reduction Training) in 2019. “PEAK” will also be delivered by the same group of facilitators.

The core themes that will be focused on are as follows:

• Child First: Our mantra. Helping you to understand the key principles of a Child First ethos and the implications of these in everyday practice with children in the youth justice system.
• Adultification & disproportionality: The opposite of being Child First. When notions of innocence and vulnerability are not afforded to certain children and how practitioners can ensure they remain vigilant to this type of bias.
• Joint Enterprise: Keeping practitioners informed; in light of serious incidents occurring in the borough involving weapons, resulting in the loss of life and children receiving life sentences on the principle of joint enterprise.

We welcome everyone to attend for an inclusive and reflective experience which will involve presentations, interactive discussions and the use of media – with a view to assisting your practice and helping you answer the following question:

How can I make changes to my own practice when working with children who may be at risk of or taking part in youth violence/crime?

This is a level 2 Professional course.
